STEP 2: Unit 1

Each week introduces a new alternative spelling for a sound. Pupils revise the 42 basic letter sounds and learn the main alternative vowel spellings through regular reading and dictation. For example, in Unit 1 pupils learn ‹y› as /ee/. They listen for short and long vowels in words and begin to notice simple spelling rules, such as using ‹ck› after a short vowel.

Handwriting focuses on correct letter formation for both upper- and lower-case letters, including direction of movement and using the tripod grip. Pupils revise and practise handwriting daily, beginning Step 2 with capital letters (e.g. SATIPN) and continuing alphabet work throughout the term. They also learn the letter names, saying or singing the alphabet at the start of each handwriting session.

Each week teaches new tricky words. Pupils: Read the tricky word and identify the part that is tricky. Practise writing the word using the tricky-word spelling routine: look, copy, cover, write, check. Revise previously taught tricky words using flashcards or dictation.

Every week includes: Discussion pictures to encourage vocabulary building. Modelled writing of words, phrases and sentences using only taught sounds and tricky words. Opportunities for independent writing, where pupils write words or short sentences according to ability. Teachers model how to use capital letters, full stops and spacing between words and pupils practise reading and writing a mixture of words, phrases and sentences.
