The Foundations of Phonics

Step 1 Overview

Step 1 introduces children to the five key skills of Jolly Phonics, which form the basis for all later reading and writing. At this stage, pupils learn the 42 main letter–sound correspondences, practise correct letter formation, blend sounds to read words and begin segmenting sounds for writing. The first set of tricky words is also taught towards the end of this step, ensuring pupils can access a wider range of texts.

Key skills taught:

  • Learning the 42 letter sounds (including digraphs)
  • Practising correct pencil grip and letter formation
  • Blending sounds to read simple words
  • Segmenting sounds to write simple words
  • Learning the first set of tricky words
