Lesson Focus

Pupils will:

Learn to say the voiced and unvoiced /th/ sound and recognise the grapheme ‹th›.
Link the letter sound to the action (pretending to be naughty clowns and sticking tongue out slightly to make the ‘th’ sound).
Identify words that start (or end) with the voiced /th/ & unvoiced /th/ sound.
Blend to read short regular words that have a /th/ sound in them.
Segment short regular words that have the voiced /th/ & unvoiced /th/ sound in them.
Revise previously taught letter sounds to strengthen recall, automaticity and fluency.

Teacher guidance:

Use flashcards to briefly revise the letter sounds already taught. Revise the formation of one or two letters.

What to do:

Show flashcards of taught letter sounds. Pupils say each sound once and do the action.
Choose 2 or 3 letters to write on the board. While this is being done the children form the letters in the air.

What to do:

Highlight words from the story that include the voiced and unvoiced sound /th/. Ask pupils to think of and share other words with the same sound.
Show the ‹th› flashcard, then do the action and say the voiced & unvoiced /th/ sound together as a class.
Add the new piece of wall frieze to your classroom display.
