Lesson Focus

Pupils will:

Learn to say the /l/ sound and recognise the grapheme ‹l›.
Link the letter sound to the action (pretending to lick a lollipop).
Identify words that start (or end) with the /l/ sound.
Blend to read short regular words that have a /l/ sound in them.
Segment short regular words that have the /l/ sound in them.
Revise previously taught letter sounds to strengthen recall, automaticity and fluency.

Teacher guidance:

Use flashcards to briefly revise the letter sounds already taught. Revise the formation of one or two letters.

What to do:

Show flashcards of taught letter sounds. Pupils say each sound once and do the action.
Choose 2 or 3 letters to write on the board. While this is being done the children form the letters in the air.

Teacher guidance:

What to do:

Highlight words from the story that include the letter sound /l/. Ask pupils to think of and share other words with the same sound.
Show the ‹l› flashcard, then do the action and say the /l/ sound together as a class.
Add the new piece of wall frieze to your classroom display.
