Pupils will:

Learn to say the /er/ sound and recognise the grapheme ‹er›.
Link the letter sound to the action (rolling hands as if mixing something and say ‘er, er, er’).
Identify words that start (or end) with the /er/ sound.
Blend to read short regular words that have a /er/ sound in them.
Segment short regular words that have the /er/ sound in them.
Revise previously taught letter sounds to strengthen recall, automaticity and fluency.

Teacher guidance:

Use flashcards to briefly revise the letter sounds already taught. Revise the formation of one or two letters.

What to do:

Show flashcards of taught letter sounds. Pupils say each sound once and do the action.
Choose 2 or 3 letters to write on the board. While this is being done the children form the letters in the air.

Teacher guidance:

Use the Finger Phonics Big Book to introduce and tell the story related to the new letter sound.

What to do:

Highlight words from the story that include the sound /er/. Ask pupils to think of and share other words with the same sound.
Show the ‹er› flashcard, then do the action and say the /er/ sound together as a class.
Add the new piece of wall frieze to your classroom display.
